Looking for an authentic Melbourne pub experience? There are pubs that chase trends, and then there's The Grandview Hotel in Fairfield - a triple-storey Boom-style landmark from 1888 that has quietly stayed exactly what a great neighbourhood pub should be. Having been invited, we went in expecting cold beer and footy on the big screen (nothing wrong with that). We left stunned by a Front Bar menu that punches miles above its price point. This is our verdict on one of Melbourne's most authentic pubs, and why the food deserves just as much attention as the heritage architecture.
A Pub With Soul: The Grandview Hotel, Fairfield

Built in 1888 during Melbourne's land boom, The Grandview Hotel was originally designed as an opulent three-storey Italianate hotel, gambling on a railway loop through Fairfield that never eventuated. What it lost in trains, it made up for in character - surviving an 1891 arson attempt, serving as a stop for travellers along Heidelberg Road, and later becoming a genuine pub-rock institution, ranked by rock historian Clinton Walker alongside the Crystal Ballroom as a sacred site of Australian music.
Owned by the same family since 2000, the Grandview has avoided the trap of sterile corporate gentrification. The Front Bar still feels like the real thing: original leadlight windows, a classic pressed-tin bar, pool tables, footy on the screens, and a humble rather than a million-dollar fit-out. It's generous, unpretentious, and unmistakably a pub for the people.
The Food: Unexpectedly, Seriously Good
We'll be honest - we walked in for a beer and a parma, and walked out having to reassess what a Melbourne front bar is capable of. Every dish that came off the pass looked, and tasted, top notch.
Grilled Turkish Bread + House Dips

A generous serve of Chef's selection of two house dips with warm, grilled Turkish bread. The eggplant dip was exceptional and the tzatziki was excellent - the kind of starter you don't expect to rave about at a pub, but absolutely should.
Bang Bang Chicken — A Must Order

Fried chicken pieces marinated in sweet chilli sauce, served with a rocket salad. Crispy on the outside, a genuine flavour bomb, and the single dish we'd tell every first-timer to order without hesitation. A highlight.
Salt and Pepper Squid

House-made, cooked to perfection - tender, crisp, and served simply with a rocket salad. Exactly what you want from this pub classic, executed properly.
300g Scotch Fillet

The Grandview's reputation for steak is well and truly upheld. Cooked precisely to order (medium rare, as requested) and well seasoned, served with smashed potato, broccolini, and a choice of gravy, green peppercorn, mushroom sauce, garlic butter or mustard. They know what to do with a steak!
Chicken Parmigiana

The undisputed star of the Front Bar and a certified Aussie pub icon. House-crumbed schnitzel, Chef's Napoli sauce, ham and mozzarella, served with fries and salad. The schnitzel was juicy rather than dry, and the topping was generous and beautifully balanced - no soggy crumb in sight. One of the best around.
Sticky Date Pudding & Chocolate Mousse

Two desserts, both surprisingly good. The sticky date pudding arrives with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream - pure comfort food. The chocolate mousse (GF) is lifted by vanilla cream, berry compote and honeycomb for a genuinely impressive finish.

What to Drink at The Grandview

The drinks list matches the food's ambition without losing its pub roots. Standouts included the beers on tap, the Grandview Negroni made with local Alphington Gin, a Talisker Old Fashioned that was genuinely outstanding, and a Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon - a well-balanced, soft red with ripe fruit, black pepper and dry leaf character, and exactly the calibre of wine you're glad to find on a pub list.
Weekly Specials at the Front Bar

Regulars know the rhythm of the week here, with dedicated Parma Nights, Steak Nights and Pasta Nights running alongside rotating specials, hearty Sunday roasts, and dishes that are perfect for sharing over trivia (currently Tuesday night). There's also a decent kids' menu and generous deals for seniors - a rarer find than it should be in Melbourne pubs today.

The Verdict
The Grandview Hotel Front Bar earns its reputation as one of Melbourne's great pubs. It has the heritage bones, the community warmth, and - the part that genuinely surprised us - a kitchen that could hold its own well in a decent restaurant. The Bang Bang Chicken and Chicken Parma are must-orders, the steak upholds a long-standing reputation, and the desserts close things out properly. Add attentive service, generous portions and fair pricing, and you have a proper, unpretentious Fairfield institution that's very much worth the trip. Keen to return.
