Henry Sugar Launches Henry Home
Henry Sugar has launched Henry Home and we were invited along to celebrate the new opening.
The community and culture that Rathdowne Street Wine Bar and Restaurant, Henry Sugar, has nurtured since it opened in 2016 has grown further with the addition of thoughtfully designed and detailed boutique accommodation above the restaurant, called Henry Home.
Baker’s Fine Art Degree; that he gained in New Zealand in the mid-2000’s, has informed much of the aesthetic and artwork throughout the apartment. He and Mason are behind the new kitchen design, and planning of the foods, wines and carefully curated vinyl record selection for those who stay. They are also planning to offer a small dinner menu that guests can enjoy in the apartment.
“We want to create a space for people who are looking to experience quality, local food, wine and hospitality in Carlton North,” says Mike, “three couples could stay, one couple, it’s for friends to get together, enjoy Melbourne and come downstairs for dinner or Sunday lunch.”
This next step in creating a boutique accommodation offering is a significant, but unsurprising move for the business partners. They have already designed Henry Sugar to offer many elements for their guests; from the ‘Chef’s Tasting Menu’ at $85/person for five courses, a set Sunday lunch menu for $50/person, to dropping in for a drink and a snack.
Cheap Mondays, on the last night of each week’s service, sees a short menu using what's left in the pantry before they close for Tuesday and Wednesday.
They offer a snack menu or a $50 two course set menu, as well as $10 Negronis, $9 glasses of wine and $8 pints. Two-dollar oysters, Thursday to Monday from 5 - 6 pm and a set Sunday lunch menu are other comforts Henry Sugar offers.
The food by chef, Sofia Erikkson, backs up the venue’s ethos with local produce treated thoughtfully. Daniel Mason’s wine list also walks the talk, he seeks out clean minimal intervention, low or no sulphur wines but, due to their mixed clientele keeps some Burgundy, Barolo and other classic styles, “It’s a balancing act,” he says.
