Staycation at Eclectic The Motley Hotel in Richmond
The Motley Hotel in Richmond is a hotel that inspires with its artistic, eclectic and vibrant accommodation, rooftop bar Threads, and standout restaurant Ms Parker. First impressions count, and when you approach The Motley from Bridge Rd Richmond you are struck by the heritage terrace facade, and then the stunning lobby/foyer upon entry. We were invited for a staycation (David and Sam) at this impressive new Melbourne hotel.
Framed colourful portraits adorn the foyer with attractive spaces featuring eclectic furniture with large bright cushions, leather sofas, a bookcase, and board games.
The lobby flows into Ms Parker with its neon lights and striking mural artwork. You soon realise there's a theme at play, and it's a celebration of Seamstress Ms Mary Parker, hence the offbeat colour and texture combinations. I can't think of a hotel like it in Melbourne.
Our Deluxe Room was impressive with access to the mini bar, amazing artwork and luxury with attention to detail. Not to mention the amazing views over Richmond.
A drink at Threads rooftop bar was a highlight, a hidden gem in Richmond. We recommend the Japanese Slipper and Spicy Margarita.
Dinner at Ms Parker restaurant was another highlight, with every dish impressing. Along with the service, lighting and artwork of note, this was an inviting sensory experience. As a "hotel restaurant" Ms Parker shines and is a worthy destination restaurant in Richmond.
The Charcuterie platter set the scene as an exceptional starter. A delightful medium-body Italian Sangiovese 2020 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina from Tuscany was the perfect accompaniment for all dishes.
Staff were engaging and obviously proud of the restaurant and the hotel. The Lamb Shank with Paris Mash was a melt-in-your-mouth showstopper.
Angas Porterhouse was cooked to perfection, but it was the killer jus that set it off. Char grilled Broccoli was a fabulous side dish.
The Apple Berry Crumble with Whiskey Ice Cream was exceptional value at only $15 for 2 people.
We enjoyed the views from our room including at night and at sunrise.
Breakfast in Ms Parker was also a winner. For a start, the coffee is of a high standard.
A must order is the Shakshuka, Labneh, shallot pickle, poached egg, sea salt focaccia, with add on of hash browns. Another great breakfast dish is the Eggs Neptune, English muffin, smoked salmon, brown butter hollandaise.
With the city of Melbourne a short distance away and large modern shopping complex Richmond Traders nearby, you feel you are staying in a great location. Kudos to the owners for creating a unique and striking oasis in Richmond and to the welcoming and professional staff. We loved our staycation and aim to return.
