Sound of Music Launches in Melbourne

SoundofMusic2 6

The World Loves Melbourne attended the red carpet opening night of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Regent Theatre. Following its record-breaking run at the London Palladium, the world’s best-loved musical, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is now playing in Melbourne! This lavish and critically acclaimed production tells the uplifting true story of the von Trapp family’s flight across the mountains and works its magic, for young and old alike.

We felt the musical had loads of charm and was highly entertaining from start to finish. Even though we had seen the movie many times we were engrossed in the story, and even found new perspectives and nuances in this musical. Both the acting and the singing were of a high standard; we enjoy musicals where the acting is as good as the singing. With the backdrop of austere Austrian discipline and the dark clouds of war, the free spirited Maria is a breath of fresh air (even fresher than the air of the mountains near Salzburg where the von Trapp family lives).

Returning to the stage in the role of Captain von Trapp is the multi-talented CAMERON DADDO. We felt Cameron was exceptional as Captain von Trapp with his strict disciplinarian exterior, that slowly melts with the advent of Maria to the household.

Starring alongside Cameron are many of Australia’s favourite stage performers; MARINA PRIOR in the role of the Baroness Schraeder, LORRAINE BAYLY as Frau Schmidt, JACQUI DARK as Mother Abbess, and joining them in the coveted role of Maria is one of Australia’s newest and most outstanding award-winning musical theatre stars, AMY LEHPAMER (Once, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show and Rock of Ages). AMY LEHPAMER received a standing ovation in her role as Maria; with loads of talent in acting and a magical voice. She certainly is a star!

Sets and costumes are first class; you are transported back into the period and the beauty of the Austrian mountains.

With its unforgettable score, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC touches the hearts of all ages and brims over with some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical stage including My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, The Lonely Goatherd, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and of course the glorious title song The Sound of Music.  It’s the perfect family treat! (We were singing D-Re-Mi in the car together as a family - everyone knows that song!).

We noted many Melbourne celebs at the opening night, with Regent Theatre buzzing! We had a great time and highly recommend THE SOUND OF MUSIC to all ages.
