Kinfolk stands out from the crowd as one of Melbourne’s best cafes for its artistic element, great food and coffee, and commitment to social action. It’s a non profit café and was started with recycled materials. I've been a couple of times to this oasis off bustling Bourke St.

On my first visit, I was greeted at a busy counter by several friendly hipster staff all looking happy to be there. The counter was crowded with local office types wanting a piece of Kinfolk coffee action.

I decided to have a simple fruit toast and large latte breakfast and made my way to the large communal table.

Kinfolk has one of the best atmospheres of any café in Melbourne I know. Struck by the artwork on the wall including a large painting of a tree on one wall, and teeth and red lips on another. Struck by the rusted metal at the counter. Love the high ceilings and feeling of spaciousness. Love the large window overlooking Bourke St and the natural light that pervades!

Also love the different kinds of lighting both modern and retro including spotlights and large lamps. Timber floors add to the rustic atmosphere. And there’s even a large ladder in the corner.

Love the random kinds of chairs around the communal table and the quirky tables throughout. And I love the large flower arrangement at the communal table.

Here are different interesting areas to engage in conversation or read papers provided. And the music was louder than average, the place pumping after 8am!

Also struck by the friendly service with staff engaging and attentive.

Coffee was great, supplied by Di Bella Coffee (a supporter).

Humble fruit toast was also great! Three pieces of fruit filled toast and butter.

On my second visit I connected with work colleagues and we sat at the window stools, conversing, eating, and admiring this section of Bourke St. I ordered the spanish sausage with salsa verde which was excellent, although a little small. My colleagues made positive comments about the bircher muesli.

As for commitment to social action, I noticed information on the wall saying they support development projects in several countries. And then on another wall information about supporting a local school. These guys are busy! Love it!

As a non profit café these guys are able to support the many projects. The wall also lists the hero volunteers. Kinfolk is an exciting place doing exciting things! Love it!
