Il Solito Posto means “the usual place” in Italian and is a place you want to keep returning to! A sumptuous taste of elegant rustic Italy! Il Solito Posto has been scoring goals for years and is a Melbourne icon. As they say on their website, “this is one of Melbourne’s most renowned and well respected Italian restaurants.” Love how this restaurant is hidden just off Collins St in the George Parade laneway (walk down into basement).

A long and narrow restaurant, with various eating areas, the ambience is one of European elegance and class. The Cafeteria section seats 60 people and is less formal and fun. The Trattoria section seats 50 for a more formal dining experience but as they say “not over the top!”).

Love the polished tables, slate floor, ambient dim lighting and the classy couches. Love the long bar area! Love the blackboards with menus! There are many many rows of wine bottles here - which make a statement in themselves. The wine list is reasonably expensive. There are simple displays in between the rows of wine bottles.

I came here upon recommendation by a great Italian family! Ciao! Upon entry I was greeted by a friendly waitress who handed me a menu and promptly brought water to my table. I ordered a latte (single size) and a suitably strong Italian coffee arrived. The barista uses Genovese beans which have a strong Italian blend. The machine was a Wega, excellent coffee machines manufactured in Italy. The coffee was excellent and creamy, strongish, with fine latte art…

Upon recommendation I ordered the Italian Scrambled Eggs which were amazing and had a touch of class.

The eggs were scrambled but kept well together with a fine texture – I love that! They were neatly piled on a large thick piece of toast. The eggs were interlaced with parsley and basil. A highlight was the large chunks of prosciutto. I think cooked in quality oil and delicious! The juicy red roma tomatoes complemented the meal so well. The piece de la resistance was a layering of quality Parmesan on top.  Too good! It’s now 2 hours later and I’m still feeling the love and class of this tasty and hearty breakfast!

The breakfast menu also includes handmade muesli, a buffalo mozzarella, herbs and spinach omelette, freer ange eggs on toast (order the sides), and French toast with mascarpone, fresh fig and rose petal jam.

The lunch and dinner menu includes some great traditional favourites such as spaghetti, gnocci, antipasto plates, calamari from South Australia dusted in semolina, flash fried with rocket and aoli, and other pasta favourites veal ragu, linguine frutti di mare, farfalle salmone,  and risotto del giorno. The Trattoria has fine dining options such gourmet Pasta e Risotto (including wagu ox tail) or Secondi options (in English) barramundi fillet, twice cooked duck, beef cheek and slow cooked lamb. Great desert options as well including poached pear and rhubarb crumble!

I love that Il Solito Posto also provides a takeaway menu for the gourmet business worker on the go!

Il Solito Posto was full of business people dressed in suits. I envisaged visiting this restaurant for a romantic evening with my wife! And I could see myself coming here for a long and great business lunch. I could see people coming here to meet for coffee in the Caffeteria, or to enjoy a simple pasta lunch.

You can’t book at Il Solito Posto but you can wait at the ambient bar until a table becomes available.

As I said to the waitress, I really need to return for the pasta! She said “of course”!
