Cake Wines Pinot Noir Going The Distance

  • The World Loves Melbourne loves a great Pinot Noir and the Adelaide Hills has always provided a tremendous source of Pinot magic. The Cake Wines 2012 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir is one of the best; a clean and delicate palate boasting juicy cherry and blueberry fruits, with plum flavours. One we started on this beauty we found it hard to stop.

Thanks to Glen Cassidy who sent me a bottle of Cake Wines finest. I love a smooth medium bodied Pinot Noir and Cake Wines delivers. And it's affordable. Having grown up in the Adelaide Hills I'm a fan of all things cool climate, with Cake bringing elegance and style with their packaging as well as their wine.

Glen Cassidy is also behind a great promotion of highlighting restaurants that serve their wine, in a wine matching promotion called "Matched", which The World Loves Melbourne recently participated in when we visited Prix Fixe. Other restaurants featured include Almond Bar, Elephant Corridor, Gallon Wine Bar, Fat Rupert's and The Bristol Arms.

Cake Wines is an Australian, boutique, independent wine business, created a few years ago by a couple of young wine makers and young wine lovers, Mike Smith and Glen Cassidy. The wine making team is based in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, they have an office in Redfern in Sydney and find themselves all over the country sharing their wines with people. From the wine-making, to the events they run, to the people and businesses they collaborate with..they're excited about the dawning of the new wine world; an open welcoming community of people challenging conventions of days gone by.

We note that the Cake Wines 2012 Pinot Noir is seen on several cool restaurant lists all around the nation. Not only is the wine great but the company exudes innovation and flair.

Halliday's Wine Companion recently gave Cake Wines an excellent 4.5 rating, outstanding for a three year old wine company.

For Cake Wines, great winemaking is about 3 things. First and foremost its about crafting wines that are approachable and enjoyable to drink. Secondly its about being stylistically true to the grape and region, whilst retaining just enough complexity to keep you guessing. And thirdly its about delivering the right balance of fruit sweetness, acidity and tannin to produce a well rounded and balanced wine that over-delivers for its price.

There are currently 2 ranges in the Cake Wines portfolio. The Artist Series, a light to medium bodied approachable range of wines from the Adelaide Hills and our premium short-run release, the Young Wine Maker Series.

Cake Wines loves getting involved in stuff that they think makes the world a more interesting place. Be it by donating 10% of proceeds to independant radio stations nationwide, running month long pop-up bars in weird locations, hosting food nights, secret film nights, the school of wine, the Archi-bottle Prize and a stack of other cultural experiences that they hope invite people into the beautiful world of wine.
